Hi guyssssss, well here's something kind of fun. For all you Ba'alius fans out there (I love you guys so much!), I've been working on a sculpture of him (for my portfolio) that I plan to make polyurethane resin casts of.
Here's the story: He's going to be a regular horse first, so I can reach a broader audience and buy time to do more work on Strife of Khthon, but everything about him--his body type, his personality, etc.--is Bally. SO when the time comes--very soon!!--for me to send him off to be cast, I will sell the casts of him as a horse, then modify one to be him in his entirety--unicorn tail, blade horn, and all. THEN I'll cast that one and sell him to promote Strife of Khthon.
Incidentally, there are going to be some AWESOME changes going on with SoK. The story is the same, but it will soon be an illustrated novel--meaning larger (but slightly fewer) full-color, more detailed images (and a few spot images), and a little bit more text. I'm also planning on redoing the website in HTML5 (pretty!!! and modern!). Very excited.
I graduate in 2 months! So I will be acquiring some more 'free' time shortly!
Obviously he's got a ways to go before he's finished, and I've been having some anatomy issues, but so far so good. He's done in Roma Plastilina #3, a sulfur and oil-based clay that is very hard, but can be softened by heating it in a crock pot. This is the first time I've ever used it. It's awesome and retains a huge amount of detail. In the back there is a little sculpey sculpture of a chipmunk, not quite finished.
Sorry the pictures are crappy!
The next one I'm gonna do will be Xathiador, same idea (a regular horse first). He'll be a little more active.
This looks great so far! I always find sculpture so fascinating. Its hard for me to think in 3 dimensions, even in illustration sometimes. Your talent is incredible to be able to do that in both illustration and sculpture. Keep up the great work!
so awsome!!! what do you use as far as clay goes? and do you do a wire armature, what do you use? , im just curious as ive been interested in trying to sculpt something just for fun? and hints.tips?
Thank you! I'm using Roma Plastilina #3 which is a sulfur-based clay. #3 is the second hardest clay, and it can be made more malleable by heating it up. I do use a wire armature, and I position it to mimic the shape of the bones in a horse's body, then build up the forms around it. My biggest tip is constantly use good reference, especially anatomical diagrams. The best ones are "Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger and "An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists" (alliteration!) by W. Ellenberger
(And YAAAAY for nearing graduation!)
WADDAP HOMIE!? 'member me? ;;
That clay looks like it'd be so much nicer to work with. But I'm curious: since its got some sulfur in it, does it smell at all?
Well, thanks for shedding some light on the subject!
